Easter or Spring Break?

So that was the Easter Holiday or as some are calling it the Spring break. That got me to thinking about days long ago, when it only had one title and had very little to do with chocolate. I was wondering how the wee one would react if faced with an old fashioned Easter- you remember them, the ones where the family would go to church, and afterwards, you would roll your hard boiled lovingly painted egg down the steepest hill you could find, spending hours searching for the egg at the bottom, before being called to join in the family picnic, where your wise mother or father had worked out the odds of you finding your egg and had a few spare in the basket for your enjoyment at lunch!!
Those were of course also the days when it was not dropping twenty feet of snow on top of you and spring flowers were..... well spring flowers!
The wee one this Easter went on a mini break/adventure with her granny aka the chief prosecutor aka the wife to the sunny it never rains West Highland town of Fort William, there she stayed with her mother so therefore the wee ones great grannie aka grannie Barra. I stayed at home to make sure the house would still be standing on their return, because as I have said before when the law enforcer is out of town the eighteen year old son and the ASBO gardener aka papa are more than capable of great mischief!!
So my Easter was neither traditional nor new age, however the wee one was lucky enough to experience both, grannie Barra had arranged the traditional and the rest of the relatives that live in the area had gone with the chocolate and the new form of family picnic........ McDonalds, where happy meals all round replace the hard boiled egg.
So did the wee one go into a state of shock when presented with a hard boiled egg and paints with no chocolate in sight, were tantrums thrown at the giving of a jelly piece in the great outdoors while sitting on a tartan rug, and would she give up looking for an egg she had just thrown down a great big hill, taking off demanding chocolate with a side order of fries?

No huge surprise in the answer that no she did not, the wee one delighted in the whole idea of getting messed up with paint and the fact she was getting to paint what to her would be breakfast made it even sweeter, getting out and about is in the wee ones DNA so again no issues, and again the delight of getting to throw her breakfast down a hill was almost too much for her with a game of hide and seek at the bottom of the hill what joy. As for the jelly piece and a picnic blanket who does not love that at any age!!!
So it looks like the spring break, chocolate eggs and the new age picnic served up in a fast food joint are the want of the adults with no little help from the retail industry that will post its best sales since Christmas. It does make you wonder if we have forgotten how to enjoy some of life's simple pleasures, pleasures that do not break a households budget, we have like everything else gone commercial thinking our wee ones expect it and not to deliver those expectations would be seen as failure.

With all that pressure it is no wonder I have the Easter Egg hunt kit, purchased from the local supermarket, hidden in a cupboard with the purpose of surprising the wee one next weekend- so I could enjoy a little bit of Easter with her  and her brother aka hurricane Billy!
So will I use it? Or will it be boiled eggs and paints? I will let you know!!!!!
